The 4 Main Styles of Leadership

There are 4 generally accepted types of leadership and you need to know which one describes the person you're considering. If indeed they have any leadership qualities at all, which our leadership style assessment will also reveal.

The 4 main types of leader are:

  • The autocrat: Autocratic leadership is a top-down style of leadership where the person believes they are the only one qualified to take the lead. They give orders and expect them to be followed to the letter. This type of leadership often creates a tense, fear-based work environment.
  • The democrat: The democratic leader thrives on input from their subordinates. Though they may not always incorporate outside suggestions they are earnest in their desire to hear what others think and this helps create a relaxed, inclusive environment.
  • The transformational leader: The transformational leader is someone on a mission. Entrepreneurs are transformational leaders because they see it as their job to communicate their vision to their staff and make sure everyone buys in and is pulling in the same direction.
  • The laissez-faire leader: The laissez-faire leader trusts their staff to know what to do. They typically only intervene when something's gone wrong or the team is treading water. Even then their input will be designed to help the staff find and implement the solution themselves.

About C-me

The C-me colour profiling system represents a paradigm shift in the worker assessment space. Rather than relying on outdated and often inconclusive personality-based assessments the C-me system is behaviour based. The resulting assessments are richer, more enlightening and more useful in terms of team-building than anything that's come before. Just ask the BBC, the NHS, Oracle and other companies and institutions that have adopted the C-me assessment system.

What our clients say about us

quote-ico

C-me has been a really useful tool; using them to not only develop our own self-awareness, but also learn how to communicate better as a team has been really invaluable.

Gill White Service Manager, NHS Bristol
quote-ico

The impact C-me profiles have on teams and the organisation as a whole has been fascinating and refreshing. Individuals have shown more empathy, inclusivity and understanding of their colleagues, creating a happier and more productive culture. I would feel confident in recommending C-me as it creates a shared language for discussing behaviour and difference.

Leigh-Anne Colman Global Learning and Development Lead, Oracle Data Cloud

WDC, Whale and Dolphin Conservation began using C-me as a tool for improving communication across our international senior leadership team. It helped us appreciate each other’s communication preferences better, and understand and avoid previous areas of misunderstanding. We have now started to roll C-me out across the UK organisation, putting it into our Onboarding process to help teams communication effectively and appreciate each other’s contribution.

Sian Davies-Hamilton, Director of Human Resources, WDC

While difficult to quantify in %'s, I notice a greater awareness of why conflict can happen and what team members might need to work effectively once employees understand the colour preferences. Participants on the course state that they are more measured in their responses and have a greater understanding of peoples behaviour.

Gemma Simmonds, Head of Careers and Development, Colas Rail

We pride ourselves on collaborating across departments, and C-Me allows us to enhance that process through a shared understanding of each other's working preferences...
